Standard rectangular pavers look clean and geometric. But if you own a rustic lodge, a woodland retreat, or a highly organic modern farmhouse, perfectly straight lines can clash severely with the architecture. In those cases, you want the look of natural, irregular flagstone.

The problem with natural flagstone for a driveway is that it is often too thin, cracks under vehicle weight, and the wide mortar joints fail constantly due to freeze-thaw cycles. As a hardscaping contractor, I refuse to install natural flagstone for vehicular traffic.

Instead, I use Belgard Mega-Arbel. It solves the structural problem completely while offering breathtaking aesthetics.

The Organic Puzzle Piece

Mega-Arbel is an incredibly unique paver that takes massive skill to install.

  1. The Shape: It is not a square or a rectangle. It looks like a random, organic puddle or clover. The pavers lock together like a massive puzzle, creating a seamless, meandering surface with no straight lines.
  2. False Joints: To make the illusion even more convincing, each massive paver is stamped with deep "false joints." Once installed and swept with polymeric sand, it looks exactly like multiple, smaller, irregular stones.
  3. The Scale: As the name implies, Mega-Arbel is huge. This massive scale is crucial for driveways, preventing the surface from looking too busy or cluttered.

Pros and Cons from the Field

My Experience (Pros)

  • Stunning Aesthetics: Unmatched in creating a natural, organic stone look while maintaining the structural benefits of interlocking concrete.
  • Extreme Durability: At 80mm thick, it is more than capable of handling heavy vehicular traffic without cracking.
  • Seamless Appearance: The interlocking puzzle design hides the repeating pattern incredibly well.
  • Color Blends: Available in highly sophisticated, multi-tonal color blends that mimic real earth tones.

My Experience (Cons)

  • High Labor Cost: The irregular shape requires extensive manual cutting with a concrete saw at all borders and edges, significantly increasing my installation time and labor costs.
  • High Material Waste: Due to the cutting required for the borders, I have to order 10-15% more material waste than standard rectangular pavers.
  • Surface Texture: The highly textured, cleft surface can be slightly bumpy for things like skateboards, rollerblades, or basketball dribbling compared to smooth architectural pavers.

Estimated Cost Breakdown

Because of the labor-intensive installation, Mega-Arbel is considered a premium hardscaping choice. Here is what I am quoting in 2026:

  • Material Cost: The pavers themselves typically run between $6.00 and $8.00 per square foot (uninstalled).
  • Installed Cost: When factoring in deep excavation, massive base preparation, the pavers, border cutting, and polymeric sand, expect to pay between $20.00 and $30.00 per square foot fully installed by a qualified hardscaping professional.
  • Total Project: For a standard 600 sq ft driveway, a Mega-Arbel installation can range from $12,000 to $18,000.

Despite looking like fragile natural stone, Mega-Arbel is heavily engineered concrete.

  • It is 80mm (3.14 inches) thick. Standard patio pavers are often 60mm. This extra 20mm is the difference between a patio that looks nice and a driveway that can comfortably support a 6,000 lb SUV.
  • To achieve its maximum load-bearing capacity, the gravel base underneath must be deep (I excavate 8-12 inches of compacted crushed stone for driveways) and perfectly graded.

Installation Complexity & The Border Problem

The organic shape is beautiful, but it creates a massive headache for the installer.

Because there are no straight lines, I cannot simply run the pavers up to the edge of the driveway. My crews must lay the field of pavers slightly past the desired boundary, strike a chalk line, and use a gas-powered concrete saw to cut a clean edge through the irregular stones.

After cutting, a contrasting, rectangular border paver (like a Belgard Holland stone or a dark charcoal border) is often installed around the perimeter to lock the cut edges in place and provide visual framing.

Maintenance & Care

  • Polymeric Sand: The joints between the pavers are filled with polymeric sand, which hardens like grout to prevent weeds and ant hills. This sand may need to be topped off every 3-5 years.
  • Sealing: While not required, applying a penetrating or "wet look" sealer will enhance the deep earth tones of the pavers and make oil or rust stains easier to clean.
  • Snow Removal: The textured surface means snow shoveling requires a plastic shovel edge. If using a snowblower, ensure the skid shoes are adjusted high enough to avoid catching the uneven stone texture.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I use this for a patio or walkway? Absolutely. While the 80mm thickness is designed for driveways, Belgard often offers a 60mm version specifically for patios and walkways, which is slightly less expensive and easier to handle.

Will weeds grow in the joints? If installed correctly with high-quality polymeric sand, weed growth is virtually eliminated.

Is it permeable? Standard Mega-Arbel is not permeable (water runs off the surface). However, Belgard does manufacture permeable variations of their pavers if local zoning requires you to manage stormwater runoff on-site.

If you want the ultimate organic, natural aesthetic for your hardscaping, Belgard Mega-Arbel is an unmatched product that I am proud to install on luxury homes.
