Epoxy vs Polyaspartic: Why Upgrade?

Why do professionals like me use Spartacote instead of standard epoxy?

1. UV Resistance: Standard epoxy will permanently turn yellow or amber if exposed to sunlight (like when you leave your garage door open on a Saturday). Polyaspartics are 100% UV stable and will remain crystal clear forever.
2. Cure Time: Epoxy takes days to fully cure before you can drive a heavy vehicle on it. Spartacote cures incredibly fast. My crews can often have a garage floor prepped, coated, and ready for cars in just 24 hours.
3. Flexibility: Concrete naturally expands and contracts wildly with temperature changes. Epoxy is very rigid and can easily crack. Polyaspartics have a slight elastomeric flexibility, allowing them to stretch with the concrete, completely preventing delamination.
4. Hot Tire Pickup: Polyaspartic coatings are highly resistant to "hot tire pickup"—where the heat from your car's tires literally melts standard epoxy and peels it off the floor, leaving bare concrete patches.

• Prep Required: Like all professional coatings, it requires aggressive mechanical grinding of the concrete (using large diamond grinders) before application, or it will inevitably fail.

1. Spartacote Chip (The Classic Look)

The classic "granite" look that hides dirt perfectly. Decorative vinyl flakes are broadcast into the wet base coat until the floor is completely covered (full broadcast), then sealed with a clear polyaspartic topcoat. It provides excellent traction and is the most popular choice for my residential garage remodels.

2. Spartacote Quartz (Extreme Grip)

Colored quartz sand is used instead of vinyl flakes. This creates an incredibly impact-resistant floor with massive slip resistance. This is ideal for commercial mechanics, wash bays, or homeowners who do a lot of messy woodworking or detailing.

3. Spartacote Metallic (The Showroom Look)

A highly specialized system where metallic pigments are mixed into the clear coat, creating a swirling, 3D, marble-like finish. It looks exactly like liquid glass. It belongs in a luxury car showroom. Contractor Warning: it is very slippery when wet compared to the Chip or Quartz systems.

Why You Shouldn't DIY Spartacote

Do not attempt to apply Laticrete Spartacote yourself unless you are highly experienced in professional resinous coatings.

Because it cures so incredibly fast, the "pot life" (the time you have to roll it out once mixed in the bucket) can be as short as 15 to 20 minutes. If you are too slow, it will harden like a rock in the bucket or create thick, ugly lap marks on the floor. It requires a coordinated team of 2-3 professionals to mix, cut in the edges, and roll the main floor simultaneously to apply it correctly. Leave this one to the pros.
