Painting an all-brick house is a terrifying concept for many homeowners because it is totally permanent. Once you paint porous masonry with standard acrylic latex paint, you can never go back to the original brick without sandblasting.

Furthermore, standard latex paint traps moisture inside the brick, which can lead to blistering paint and "spalling" (where the face of the brick literally crumbles off during freeze-thaw cycles). I've repaired countless ruined brick walls because of cheap paint.

What is Authentic Limewash?

Romabio is not paint. It is an authentic, slaked-lime wash mined directly from the Dolomite mountains in Northern Italy.

• Ultimate Breathability: Because it is made of lime and natural minerals, it undergoes a chemical process called calcification. It literally bonds with the brick itself. It does not form a plastic film like latex paint. This means moisture can easily evaporate through the limewash, preventing structural damage to your home.
• The 5-Day Wash-Off (Zero Risk): This is the greatest feature of Romabio for nervous homeowners. Once my crew applies it, you have up to 5 days to completely wash it off with a power washer if you hate the look. It gives you incredible peace of mind during a major exterior renovation.

The Antiqued Patina Look

Romabio Classico is not designed to create a solid, opaque color (if you want solid coverage, I use Romabio Masonry Flat). Classico is designed to look like the house has been sitting in the European countryside for a century, gently weathering away.

The Professional Application Process:

1. My crews heavily dampen the brick with water.
2. We apply the limewash thickly over the entire wall using a large masonry brush.
3. We wait 15 to 60 minutes depending on the sun.
4. We use a garden hose or a spray bottle to gently wash the limewash off specific, random bricks. This exposes the original brick color underneath, creating a stunning, distressed, antiqued look.

• Eco-Friendly: Zero VOCs and naturally resistant to mold and bacteria.

My Experience (Cons)

• Not for Solid Looks: It is specifically designed to weather and show the brick underneath. It will not hide the brick completely.
• Cost: It is significantly more expensive than standard exterior paint.
• Application Time: The distressing process (washing it off with a hose) takes real artistic vision and significantly more time than simply spraying a wall solid white. You have to hire an artisan, not just a painter.

• Per Bucket: A 15-liter bucket of Romabio Classico typically costs $250 to $280.
• Coverage: Because we dilute it heavily with water before application (often 50-100% dilution), a single 15-liter bucket can cover an astonishing 1,200 to 1,500 square feet of brick.
• Value: Despite the high bucket price, the extreme coverage rate makes it very cost-effective for large homes when compared to primer + 2 coats of paint.

Top Limewash Colors

• Avorio White: The classic. A slightly warm, creamy white that looks highly historic. It pairs beautifully with brown or red undertones in the exposed brick.
• Bianco White: A brighter, crisper white. Often used when my clients want a slightly more modern farmhouse aesthetic with black trim.
• Riposo Beige: A warmer, earthy beige tone. This is perfect for blending heavily mismatched brick repairs or additions where you want to unify the look without going totally white.

Maintenance Expectations

Because it is a natural mineral product designed to weather, Classico Limewash will naturally erode very slowly over time.

Depending on how much direct rain hits your house, you may need a crew to touch it up every 10 to 15 years to maintain the desired level of white coverage. However, many of my clients actually prefer it as it ages, as the continued erosion only makes the patina look more authentic over time.
