Introduced in 1993, it was North America’s very first tumbled paver, and it remains one of the most popular, reliable choices for driveways, patios, and walkways over 30 years later.

The Tumbled Finish (The Secret to the Look)

The defining characteristic of Brussels Block is its antiqued, tumbled finish.

During the manufacturing process, after the pavers cure, they are literally tumbled in a massive steel drum. This violent process chips the edges, softens the sharp corners, and distresses the face of the stone.

This process makes the brand-new concrete pavers look like hand-chiseled stones that have been sitting in a European courtyard for hundreds of years. It completely removes the "artificial" look of standard, perfectly square concrete pavers.

Driveway Durability and Pattern

Brussels Block is highly recommended for driveways because of its thickness and its interlocking strength.

• The Interlock: When my crews lay these in a herringbone pattern or a random ashlar pattern, the pavers lock together tightly. This distributes the massive weight and turning torque of heavy vehicles across the entire surface rather than concentrating it on a single stone, preventing rutting and cracking.
• Winter Durability: Unilock manufactures these pavers to far exceed standard concrete strength, making them highly resistant to freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salts used in northern climates where we operate.

Popular Colors

Unilock offers slight regional color variations depending on where the pavers are manufactured, but the most popular blends I install include:

• Sandstone: A warm, earthy blend of tans and light browns. It is absolutely perfect for matching traditional red brick homes.
• Limestone: A classic, cool gray that pairs beautifully with modern farmhouses or blue/gray siding.
• Sierra: A complex, highly variegated blend of grays, browns, and subtle reds. It is an excellent choice for a driveway because the heavy variation hides tire marks and oil drips exceptionally well.
• Coffee Creek: A rich, warm brown blend that looks stunning against green landscaping and woodland environments.

Design Tip from a Pro: The Contrast Border

Because Brussels Block has a softened, heavily tumbled edge, it looks incredible when bordered by a stark, crisp, high-contrast paver.

I highly recommend using a dark, modern paver like Unilock Copthorne (in the Basalt black color) or Courtstone as a double-sail border around the perimeter of a Brussels Block driveway. The contrast between the antiqued, rough main field and the sharp, black border creates a truly luxurious, custom-designed entrance.
