For decades, low-voltage landscape lighting was incredibly simple and static: a transformer turned the lights on at dusk, and turned them off at midnight.

If you wanted a specific light to be dimmer because it was glaring in your window, you had to physically go buy a lower-wattage bulb and change it. If you wanted red and green lights for Christmas, you had to walk outside in the snow, unscrew the fixtures, and swap out colored glass lenses. I've done it a hundred times for clients.

Build Quality (Not a Cheap Smart Bulb)

• Price: Smart technology is expensive. A single WAC color-changing fixture can cost $150 to $250, compared to $50 for a standard "dumb" brass light from a direct-to-consumer brand.
• Connectivity Issues: Because the smart chips are located inside heavy metal fixtures (which act like Faraday cages) and are then buried in the dirt, the Bluetooth/WiFi signal can sometimes struggle. You must have excellent outdoor WiFi coverage (often requiring an outdoor access point) for the system to work reliably on a schedule.
