The Authentic Charm of Limewash Brick

For homeowners who despise the busy, dated look of their 1980s multi-colored brick but are terrified of the maintenance required by traditional painted brick, there is a perfect, historic solution: Limewashing.

Limewash is not paint. It is an ancient technique dating back to the Roman Empire, made by crushing limestone, burning it, and mixing it with water to create a putty. When applied to porous brick, it doesn't sit on the surface like a plastic film (as latex paint does). Instead, it chemically bonds with the brick, calcifying and becoming part of the masonry itself.

The "Before & After" Magic

The before-and-after transformation of a limewashed home is truly stunning. A dark, imposing, and visually chaotic red-and-brown brick house is instantly brightened and softened.

The most desirable aspect of limewash is the "distressed" or "antiqued" finish. Because limewash is meant to be partially washed off during application (hence the name), you can control exactly how much of the original brick color peeks through. The Application Process

Applying limewash is closer to an art form than a standard painting job. The brick must be thoroughly cleaned and dampened before application. The limewash is brushed on (usually with a large masonry brush, never sprayed), and then, while it is still wet, the contractor uses a hose or a wet rag to wash it off in strategic areas to create the desired distressed look.

If you hate the look within the first 48 hours, it can be completely pressure-washed off. However, once it cures, it is permanent and will only slowly weather and soften over decades.
