When designing a luxury home or executing a high-end exterior renovation, the entryway is the focal point that dictates the perceived value of the entire property. While a standard single door with sidelights is functional, nothing commands attention and establishes a sense of grandeur quite like a set of massive double doors featuring expansive glass.

Double doors instantly elevate the architectural scale of the house, making the facade feel wider, more substantial, and undeniably premium.

The primary functional benefit of double glass doors is the massive influx of natural light.

A home with a dark, enclosed entryway feels cramped and uninviting, regardless of its actual square footage. By installing two doors comprised primarily of glass (whether clear, frosted, or decorative leaded), you turn the entire entryway into a giant window. This floods the interior foyer with sunlight, making the interior feel significantly larger, airier, and more welcoming the moment a guest steps inside.

The Functional Realities of Double Doors

Before tearing out your single door to install doubles, you must understand the structural and functional requirements.

1. The Rough Opening: Double doors require a massive hole in your house. A standard set of 36-inch double doors requires a rough opening of at least 74 inches. If your current opening is smaller, a contractor will have to reframe the wall and install a new, larger structural header, which adds significant labor costs.
2. The Astragal: When double doors close, they meet in the middle. One door is usually fixed (pinned in place top and bottom), while the other is active. The piece that seals the gap between them is called the astragal. Even on the highest-quality doors, the astragal is the weakest point for air leaks and weather stripping failure. Double doors will never seal quite as tightly against extreme wind and rain as a single solid door.
3. Security: Because there is no solid center door jamb to bolt into, double doors rely on vertical pins dropping into the floor and ceiling. While secure, they are inherently easier to force open than a single door bolted into a solid wood frame.
